Mentoring, supervision and coaching
Three ways of having
someone alongside you.
Mentoring tends to who you are. Supervision tends to your practice. Coaching tends to where you are going. Each one is confidential, and runs face to face or by video.
“Which one of these do I actually need?”
Mentoring – who you are
Supervision – your practice
Coaching – where you are going
Which one are you looking for?
The three sit close together, so here is the plain difference between them.
Mentoring
Someone further along, pouring into your tank
- The focus
- Who you are, rather than what you do.
- Who is in the room
- You and a mentor, one to one, and sometimes as a couple.
- What you bring
- Your faith, your relationships, your emotional tank, your sustainability, and whatever could stop you finishing.
- Where it leads
- A fuller tank, fewer vulnerabilities, and a life you can sustain.
Supervision
A reflective space on the work itself
- The focus
- How what is happening is affecting your practice.
- Who is in the room
- You and a professional supervisor, independent of your line management.
- What you bring
- Whatever is happening in ministry, and the matters you want to explore.
- Where it leads
- Self-awareness, relationship awareness and contextual awareness – including the blind spots.
Coaching
An agreed goal, and the road towards it
- The focus
- Where you are going, and what will get you there.
- Who is in the room
- An individual, a team or a group.
- What you bring
- A goal you have agreed on, and the questions worth reflecting on.
- Where it leads
- Movement from your present situation towards your preferred future.

Filling your emotional tank
What mentoring is
A mentor is someone further along who pours into your tank from their own experience. The focus is on who you are, rather than what you do – and mentoring helps you discover the sweet spots of life.
In mentoring we take time to fill your emotional tank. What have you intentionally done this week to replenish?
5 key areas of mentoring
- How are you and Jesus?
- How are your key relationships?
- How full is your emotional tank?
- Is your life sustainable?
- What has the potential to stop you from finishing?
Are you passionate about helping others to also flourish? Being mentored is the best way to learn to mentor, and that is where the Growth Track begins.
Reflective support for your leadership
What professional supervision is
Supervision improves a leader’s well-being and development, and it creates a healthier and safer environment for those they lead. It enhances self-awareness, relationship awareness and contextual awareness, so blind spots come into view and your understanding of your own health and practice grows more accurate.
“…be inwardly transformed by the Holy Spirit through a total reformation of how you think.”

How does supervision work?
Verve’s professional standards
We provide professional supervisors who:
Our supervision looks at the impact of issues on your ministry practice, and promotes ethical behaviour without being tied to line management. That independence is crucial to effective supervision.
“Professional Supervision is a broad space to talk about whatever is happening in ministry, sensitive to God’s voice and the spiritual…which affects transition and transformation, resulting in the minister having enhanced self-awareness, ministering competence, theological understanding and Christian commitment.”
Move towards your preferred future
What coaching is
What if you had someone alongside you, helping you to be all that you are designed to be? That is what a coach does. They draw out the best in you. It is a relationship that heads towards an agreed goal, and it can be with an individual, a team or a group.
Through the key skills of listening and asking questions, we help you find out what God wants you to do, and then help you to pursue it. It is assisting you to move from your present situation towards your preferred future.
Coaching is a powerful tool for leadership development, because the questions enable reflection. Information alone does not change us. It is when we reflect on the information that we change and grow.
