Everything you can take sits under Assessments, in the menu on the left. There are up to three cards on that page. The Buoyancy card is your daily check-in, one question a day. The Health of a Christian Leader card is the HCLA. It looks at your own health as a leader. The Christian Leader Mentor Assessment looks at how you mentor others. If you are not sure where to start, begin with the HCLA. Select Start on its card. The HCLA looks at three areas of a Christian leader’s health: psychological wellbeing, spiritual vitality and transformative leadership. You rate 125 statements, from one, not true of me, to four, very true of me. Here are the three types. Personal Reflection is for you alone. Your results open as soon as you finish. The 180° and 360° types ask people around you for feedback. Until you finish one HCLA, those two are greyed out. They say Do your own first. So a Personal Reflection is a good first step. Now go back to the Assessments page. The mentor assessment stays locked until you complete your own HCLA. Its card says Complete your HCLA to unlock this, with a link to Start your HCLA. The iPhone and iPad app is in testing. It offers the same choices. Here is what to do next. Start with a Personal Reflection on the HCLA. When you finish, read your results. Then keep up your daily check-in between assessments.

Everything you can take sits under Assessments. There are up to 3 cards there:
- Buoyancy Check-ins – your daily check-in, one question a day
- Health of a Christian Leader – a look at your own health as a leader
- Christian Leader Mentor Assessment – a look at how you mentor others.
If an assessment has been switched off for your organisation, its card does not appear.
If you are not sure where to start, begin with the Health of a Christian Leader Assessment (HCLA). Until you have finished one, the feedback options and the mentor assessment stay locked.
What does the HCLA look at?
The HCLA looks at 3 areas of a Christian leader’s health:
- psychological well-being
- spiritual vitality
- transformative leadership.
You rate 125 statements about yourself, from 1 (Not true of me) to 4 (Very true of me). They are grouped into 25 sections, one for each behavioural expression. For the steps, see How do I take the HCLA?.
Should I ask other people for feedback?
When you start an HCLA, you choose one of 3 types.
| Type | Who answers |
|---|---|
| Personal Reflection | Only you. Your results open as soon as you finish. |
| 180° Feedback | You, plus your spouse, your supervisor or both. |
| 360° Feedback | You, plus people around you – spouse, supervisor, peers and direct reports. |
For a 180° or 360° assessment, you answer first. Then you invite people by email, choosing each person’s relationship to you: Spouse, Supervisor, Peer/Colleague or Direct Report. Both types use the same invitation page, with the same 4 relationships to choose from. See How do I invite people to give feedback on my HCLA?
A Personal Reflection is a good first step. A 180° or 360° helps when you want to see yourself through the eyes of people who know you well.
Why are some options locked?
The 180°, the 360° and the Christian Leader Mentor Assessment open once you have completed one HCLA. Finishing a Personal Reflection is enough. Nobody else needs to switch them on.
Until then:
- on the HCLA page, 180° Feedback and 360° Feedback are greyed out and marked Do your own first
- the Christian Leader Mentor Assessment card says Complete your HCLA to unlock this, with a Start your HCLA link.
What is the Christian Leader Mentor Assessment?
The Christian Leader Mentor Assessment (CLMA) is for people who mentor others. It looks at 13 mentor competencies, in 2 groups: prerequisites and behavioural competencies. You rate each statement from 1 (Never) to 5 (Always).
It offers the same 3 types:
- Personal Reflection – only you, with your results straight away
- 180° Feedback – you, then a supervisor, a peer or both
- 360° Feedback – you, then supervisors, peers and the people you mentor.
For the steps, see How do I take the Christian Leader Mentor Assessment?
On iPhone and iPad
The Verve Lead app for iPhone and iPad is in testing.
Tap Assessments. You will see a Healthy Christian Leader card for the HCLA and a CLMA card for the mentor assessment. Your daily check-in has its own Buoyancy tab.
The app offers the same 3 types of HCLA. Until you have finished one HCLA, only Personal reflection will start. The CLMA card shows the same Complete your HCLA to unlock this message as the web.
